Bushmans Kloof is part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection and has been on my list of places to go to for at least two years. Located in the Cederberg mountains, this reserve and wellness retreat is an absolute gem, which is very refreshing based on the numerous times one books through a website only to find that on arrival the accommodation is not what was expected. At the last minute we added an extra night making it three nights and two full days and I am so pleased we did.
All meals (breakfast, lunch, high tea and dinner) excluding lunch on the day of arrival or departure and beverages, are included in the rate. We decided to skip high tea but I made up for it at dinner with a prawn starter, beef fillet and an indulgent chocolate dessert. The second night we were fortunate to have the chef from The Twelve Apostles as a guest chef and made our way through a 5 course-tasting menu paired with Bouchard Finlayson wines, which was delicious.
Our two days were spent seeing Bushman paintings, attending a cooking demonstration by chef Christo Pretorius from The Twelve Apostles, hiking, running, cycling, doing bush drives which of course included G&Ts, and spa treatments – absolute heaven. We gave the canoeing a miss as although we had beautiful weather we thought the water would be a little too cold. The under floor heating in the rooms and bathroom, fireplaces with wood packed out each evening, electric blankets switched on during turn down service and other little extras made it just that much more special.
It is difficult to believe that all this is only 3 and a half hours out of Cape Town yet you feel like you are miles away and leave feeling totally relaxed albeit a little heavier in the weight department, but it’s certainly worth it.
